Yesterday marked the ninth annual announcement of the legendary hip-hop news source, XXL’s Freshman Class. These artists are the creme de la creme of rappers in the game today. Featured on the cover of the June 28th edition of XXL includes rappers 21 Savage, Anderson .Paak, Dave East, Denzel Curry, Desiigner, G Herbo, Kodak Black, Lil Dicky, Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty. All these men have brought something to the table that has resulted in an explosion of hype to their names. Over the upcoming months there will be a slew of releases from these artists. Get ready to have some ear sex with your headphones, because this shit should be lit.

Each year, the Freshman Class does a great job at capturing an image of where the hip hop music scene is at currently, and what direction it will be going in the near future. They select artists from all over the country, ranging in cities from Los Angeles, to Harlem, to our own hometown of Atlanta. While there will always be debates about who should have made the cut, and who shouldn’t have, this list is one that becomes anticipated early on in the winter months, way before it is released.
Out of the lucky ten artists, my personal favorite pick, hands down, is Anderson .Paak. Not only is he an amazing musician, he also brings an inspiring, creative element to his videos, as well as creating amazing collaborations with other artists.
Additionally, it was surprising to me to see Post Malone left off the list, especially after his success with the track “White Iverson”. But, unfortunately, not all of the breakout rappers in 2016 could make it on this elite spotlight from XXL.
Keep tuned on our blog for more updates and features on these artists as they climb their way up to the top.
