Coloring Outside The Lines: A Review of Chance The Rapper's Newest Mixtape

Chance the Rapper is a noted hip-hop artist, generating buzz all over the scene. Hailing from the Midwest’s one and only city of Chicago, he is what I would consider an artist on the rise. However, his flow is completely underground giving us bars like no other. His dropping of verses will keep you wanting more Chance. Hell, that's what this man is known and loved for.

According to Wikipedia, “Coloring Book is the third official mixtape by American hip hop recording artist Chance the Rapper. It was released early in the morning on May 12, 2016, at 1AM EST on Apple Music, before it had been leaked one hour later on DatPiff for the digital download.”

Although the initial release was met with much acclaim from music critics, I expected that Coloring Book would have come harder with the flow and the verses. I'm not bashing Chance, I just simply expected more from him this time around. Additionally, the album could be considered a "Gospel album" if we’re talking technicalities. In this piece of work, he draws on his faith and the current state of his hometown, while still keeping it “hood”, like we all want to hear from him. This becomes apparent in songs like "No problem (feat. Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz)" and "Mixtape (Feat. Young Thug & Lil Yachty). Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit is felt throughout the album in songs like "Summer Friends (feat. Jeremih & Francis & The Lights)" and "Blessings" along with various others. After listening through the tracks, I think Chance has discovered his truth through the making of this album. Overall, Coloring Book is definitely worth the listen, so add it to your playlist and press play next time you’re in the car. Personally, I would rate the album 4 out of 5, because that's just the way DaSean sees it!
